Farm Safety Day!

On Saturday, the Blount County Young Farmers held the bi-annual "Farm Safety Day" at our farm. We invite all the local EMS/Fire Departments to learn about farm extrication, which basically means how to rescue people out of farm equipment. It's just as much of a service to them as a service to us because if Lance gets caught in some cotton picker or bushog, I want the rescuers to know what they're doing!

It started at 9AM, but we had some early arrivals. Three of our neighbor's peacocks decided to pay the shed roof a visit early that morning. (You can see the male peacock peeping over the peak of the roof on the left, the females are on the right).

A certified teacher explains the basics with a slide show before the hands-on demonstrations (well not literally hands on, everybody left with their limbs intact).

Here they are looking at our neighbor's combine (we don't do enough grain to actually own one, so they combine for us).

Discussing the cotton picker.

Everyone looking at our new peanut inverter (it digs the peanuts out of the ground, and then flips them over for the combine).

Our poultry house cruster (gets the top layer of crusty chicken poop out of the houses).

Our neighbor's hay baler (we don't do hay).

And lastly, here's our sprayer.

We also had a visit from the Lifesaver helicopter! One of the Young Farmer members works for Lifesaver, so she got them to fly in and demonstrate! It landed in Jim and Nell's front yard. (Does crop insurance pay for a helicopter blowing your cotton away?)

After all of the demonstrations, we fed everyone some bbq!

Here was our dessert table! I contributed a triple layer brownie, it was the first dessert gone!

When everyone left, the Young Farmer's posed with Lance's cotton picker!

Here was what my brownie looked like before it was gobbled up! Triple Layer Peanut Butter Brownies
1 pkg (19-21oz) brownie mix-prepared
1 cup cold milk
1 pkg (3.4oz) vanilla instant pudding
1 cup creamy peanut butter
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1 1/2 cup frozen Cool Whip
3 squares semi-sweet chocolate
1/2 cup dry roasted peanuts

Whisk milk and pudding. Mix 2 min. while brownies are cooling. Add peanut butter and sugar. Mix well. Cover and refrigerate pudding mixture until brownies are cooled. Spread pudding mixture over brownies. Microwave Cool Whip and chocolate 1 min. Stir every 30 secs. Spread over pudding. Sprinkle with nuts. Refrigerate 1 hour.

  2. I can't even imagine being stuck in one of those GIANT tractors. It's great to know that somebody can try to prepare you for something like that!

The brownies look wonderful and I will be expecting them at the next family function...lol!

  3. Really good idea having the emergency people out to get familiar with equipment.

I worry every time my hubby is out on the backhoe or the 'dozer --- especially if I can't go check on him every so often.

The cotton picker looks like somebody's nightmare! LOL I'd sure hate for that thing to get hold of me.
