Harvesting Wheat

Wheat harvest is in full swing around here! This year we had 80 acres of wheat.
First step in harvesting wheat: Find a good co-pilot.
This is the grain platform. The reel helps to feed the wheat onto the platform. There is a sickle bar that cuts the heads off the wheat, and the wheat falls onto the platform. Behind the sickle bar is the gathering auger. This auger brings all of the grain to the throat or feeder housing of the combine.

Here is a video of that in action!

The grains of wheat are separated from the head and travel up the grain elevator chain into the holding bin of the combine. The straw is blown out the back.
Check out the video!
When the holding bin on the combine is full, the combine is pulled beside a hopper bottom trailer. The unloading auger swings out over the trailer and empties the combine.

And that is how you harvest wheat!

  2. Thank you so much. Farming technology is amazing. I traveled across IL and IND yesterday and saw lots of wheat (tho mostly corn). Late planting because of wet fields and cooler temps keep them a little behind you, but OHHHH, how beautiful is a field of wheat! :D

  3. The wheat was cut this weekend around our house. We noticed that it's cut higher this year. Do you know why?

If I'm ever down your way I would love a tour of the farm!

    1. Sometimes the wheat is cut really low when it has blown over some, so maybe it was cut higher because it was standing up straighter this year. We'd love to give you a tour of the farm!
